The scientists were running tests in hope of understanding the relationship between sexual arousal and genital pain to analyse the threshold of pain for a woman during discomfort while having sex.

The study included 42 healthy women with an average age of 24 years who were asked to watch pornographic movies as well as excerpts from non-sexual films. They were asked to insert the balloons while the scientist controlled the level of inflation with a remote; deflating it when it started to get uncomfortable for the women.
The women reported much higher levels of arousal with the added pressure while watching the sexual content.

The women valued the experiment on a 10-point scale ranging from ¡°unpleasant¡± to ¡°pleasant¡± with a high average of 7.2. They also recorded the reactions of women, which revealed comments such as ¡°a bit weird¡±, to ¡°stimulating¡±, ¡°interestingly¡±. Meanwhile, the reactions on vaginal pressure ranged from ¡°not very pleasant¡± to ¡°doable¡±.
