Winter is finally here! As the cold weather sets in, people find themselves reaching out for cosy clothes, warm food, and drinks. For some, even the warmest jackets or winterwear may feel insufficient, and you may wonder why.
It is a fact that some people tend to feel extra cold as compared to others, including children, adults, and senior citizens. But did you know? Deficiencies of essential vitamins in the body can lead to this condition. ¡°Being deficient in nutrients tends to impact the body's capacity to generate and retain heat, effectively making one prone to feeling cold. Vitamins B12, D, and iron are crucial when it comes to thermoregulation and energy metabolism,¡± says Dr. Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, at Gleneagles Hospital Parel, Mumbai.
Feeling extra cold than everyone else, check on your vitamins
Vitamin B12 shouldn¡¯t be missed, as it is also required for red blood cell production and nerve function, but the deficiency can lead to anaemia, causing poor circulation and increased feelings of cold that can steal one¡¯s peace of mind. Dr. Manjusha explains, ¡°Vitamin D, often called the 'sunshine vitamin,' is vital for calcium absorption and immune function. Low levels are common in winter and may contribute to cold intolerance. Hence, many people will struggle during colder months and feel extreme cold and avoid venturing out of the house.¡±
Ways to manage vitamin deficiency
It is the need of the hour to manage these vitamin deficiencies on time without any further delay to be able to improve overall well-being. Dr. Manjusha shares some vital tips:
- See a doctor soon: Go for testing as recommended by the doctor.
- Diet plays a major role: One should equally focus on the diet along with taking appropriate supplements, including vitamin D, B12, and iron, as advised by the doctor.
- Ensure sun exposure: When it comes to dealing with vitamin D deficiency, it is better to ensure regular and safe sun exposure in the morning around 8:00 am to keep the levels in check.
- Take supplements: Take the supplements as per the doctor¡¯s advice and don¡¯t go overboard. It is suggested to know about your nutritional levels by going for regular testing.
These are some foolproof strategies to avoid feeling extremely cold. Don't be just glued to your couch during winter; stay active and energised.
