Delhi and other parts of the National Capital Regions (NCR) woke up to a thick blanket of smog on Wednesday morning. Residents complained about breathing issues and burning eye conditions.

According to the Central Pollution Board (CPCB), Delhi¡¯s air quality index (AQI) remained in the ¡®very poor¡¯ category dropping to 361, for the 15th consecutive day. In a research presented at the 28th European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology Congress in Madrid, air pollution can lead to hair loss. The researchers tested the effect of dust and fuel particles on the human scalp cells and found that exposure to toxic air pollutants reduced the levels of proteins responsible for hair growth.

Air pollution may contribute to hair loss, although it still lacks strong evidence, Dr Rashmi Sriram, Consultant-Dermatology, Fortis Hospital, Rajaji Nagar shares, ¡°Some of the risk factors that may damage the hair quality include living in urban areas with high pollution levels, frequent outdoor activities, smoking, and using heating styling tools.¡±

While, individuals with pre-existing hair conditions, like dryness or dandruff, are more susceptible. Other factors include humidity, temperature, and exposure to chemicals in hair products.

Moreover, the toxic air pollutants can settle on your scalp as well as hair which can cause extreme dryness and hair fall. ¡°This can lead to clogged hair follicles, weak and brittle hair strands, and frizzy hair. Tips and tricks to take care of your hair amid air pollution

Use a hat or scarf: Try wearing a hat or scarf while stepping outdoors especially if you are going to travel through two-wheelers to protect them from being exposed to harmful pollutants.

Wash your hair regularly: Make sure you wash your hair regularly to flush out the pollutants that may have settled on your scalp.

Follow a healthy hair care routine: Maintaining a hair care routine that consists of using gentle hair products like a hair mask, shampoo, conditioner, and serum can be helpful.

Use nourishing shampoos: Use nourishing shampoos and conditioners, and supplement with hair masks or serums rich in antioxidants.

Detangle gently: Detangle gently with wide-tooth combs, and protect your hair from UV damage with specialised hats or hair products.

Chop it off frequently: Regular trims will prevent split ends, while indoor air purifiers help reduce pollution exposure.
