A recent study reveals that we use our kitchen sponges far longer than we need to and all methods of cleaning them are futile attempts to curb the rapid growth of bacteria within them!
The report published in the journal Scientific Reports in Nature.com found that sponges that the trick of microwaving (has been going around for some time now) your sponge or boiling it or throwing it into a dishwasher or sanitising it using any other means could actually make it even dirtier.

Not only did contain sanitising the sponge result in it containing no fewer bacteria that uncleaned ones, the pathogenic bacteria (strongest, smelliest and the most dangerous bacteria) survived, claimed the study.
The authors concluded that this is probably because the resistant bacteria that survive re-colonise themselves the time they reach the size they were at before the process of sanitisation. In other words, the bacteria re-colonise faster after being sanitised to reach its previous size or more.

The scientist found an astounding 82 billion bacteria living in a cubic inch of space; indicating how densely populated the microbes were. That¡¯s similar to the bacterial density found in human stool samples!
