'All IITs have suffered,' IIT Mandi Director confirms, reporting a fall in placement rate to 83% at his institute
India's IITs are facing a significant decline in placements, with early reports having indicated hundreds of unplaced students across all 23 institutes. In a recent interview, IIT Mandi's director confirmed this while sharing that placement rates have dropped at his institute from 97% last year to 83% this year.
The hiring landscape for this season at India's prestigious IITs has taken a significant downturn, a trend that is raising alarm bells. Earlier this year, reports highlighted a troubling scenario where all 23 IITs were left grappling with hundreds of unplaced students. IIT Bombay's placement report further revealed a disheartening reality, with some graduates receiving offers as low as 4 LPA. In a recent interview with the Indian Express, the director of IIT Mandi confirmed these concerns, underscoring that all IITs are facing challenges in securing placements for their students this season.
Laxmidhar Behera, who was an electrical engineering professor from IIT Kanpur, is IIT-Mandi's director since January of 2022.
Speaking to the Indian Express, he said, "All IITs have suffered. There are uncertainties in the global market, and there are multiple reasons for this."
He lists AI and global uncertainties as among the reasons behind it. "AI is a big disruptor, taking away many jobs, and even major corporations have retrenched people. But we are trying our best."
However, Behera is still hopeful: "In spite of the negative repercussions, we still achieved 83% placement this year, compared to 97% last year."
He did emphasise, however, that there are ¡°some issues¡± with B.Tech students. "Our students expect very high packages, similar to those in the software sector, which is not typical for PSUs. Public sector jobs offer long-term benefits and stability ¡ª they aren't part of the so-called rat race. I advise undergraduates to value these jobs within India," he stressed.
