An Indian-origin software engineer settled in the US recently experienced what many others have been facing recently: a layoff. Layoffs have been occurring across the board, from giants like Google and Tesla, to domestic firms like Paytm. However, unlike most, he was given a reason - the company revealed their preference for hiring workers directly from India.
Company wanted a different kind of Indian
In a video circulating on X, an Indian-origin techie introduces himself and shares that his entire team was recently laid off.
During his exit interview, he was shocked to learn that the company was replacing him and his team with workers in India.
Despite emphasising that he too was Indian and that his family had moved to the US for work, the company did not reconsider, stating they wanted a different "kind" of Indian.
"They (the company) were like, 'no, no, no, you don't get it. We are getting rid of you. We are moving the job to India to be done by Indians from India, who will do it cheaper there.' And in that moment, I turned into every one of your fathers. I was like, 'go**amn Indians are taking our jobs,'" he said in the video.

The video has gone viral, crossing over 3.2 million views. In the comments section, a variety of opinions were shared.
One person stated, "It's not that you're Indian, it's that you are now 90% less expensive."
Another person corroborated this, saying, "Bro doesn't get it. He's being laid off because he's expensive."
Yet another commenter emphasised, "It's all about the money. They will work for way less in India. It's not even close. We can't compete with India, or China when it comes to how little they can survive with over there."
Another comment read, "It's not about Indians. It's about paying people cheap. American corporations rely on cheap labor for big profits for themselves."
