Didn't study Biology in Classes 11 and 12, but want to become a doctor? You are in for luck, according to the latest guidelines of the National Medical Commission.
The new guidelines of NMC make it possible for a student who cleared 10+2 exams with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics also to become a doctor. However - that does not mean you can escape Biology altogether.
What do the new NMC guidelines on medical education say?
The new NMC guidelines state that students with physics, chemistry, and biology as core subjects in 10+2 can still become doctors by clearing a biology/ biotechnology examination as an additional subject at the 10+2 level from any recognised board.
Candidates who have undertaken the study of requisite subjects ¡ª physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology along with English ¡ª even as additional subjects after passing Class XII will be permitted to appear in NEET-UG test for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in India, according to the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 as notified by NMC on June 2.
Such candidates will also be eligible for grant of eligibility certificate, which is a legal proof given by NMC to a candidate, certifying that they are eligible to pursue undergraduate medical courses abroad.
What did the earlier rules of NMC state?
Earlier, to be eligible to pursue MBBS or BDS, a student had to study physics, chemistry and biology in Class XI and XII, along with practicals and English.
The two years of continuous study were required to be from a regular school and not from any open school or as a private candidate.
The new rules allow those students who did not study biology as a core subject in Class XI and XII to also appear for NEET-UG and get a medical degree.
The changes came after detailed deliberations in a meeting held on June 14, 2023, which considered that the New Education Policy permits great flexibility in the study of various subjects in Class 12.
