58-Year-Old Man Tracks Down Stolen Vehicle In 2 Hours Using GPS; Gets Thief Arrested

A 58-year-old man whose car was stolen turned detective and tracked it down in just two hours. Relying on the GPS tracker installed in the Eeco van, he succeeded not only in recovering his car, but also got the thief arrested.

Harjeet Singh, a transporter, owns five cars that he hires out to an online retail company. When he bought the Eeco two years ago, he had it fitted with a GPS device, and it proved its worth. On Thursday night his driver brought back the car at 10.30 as usual and parked it near his home in Hari Nagar in west Delhi.

¡°When I took a stroll, I saw the van. But on my morning walk the next day, I noticed that the car was missing,¡± said Singh. ¡°I called the driver, and we looked for the van in the neighbourhood, but couldn¡¯t find it.¡±

Singh¡¯s first thought was to go to the cops. But he had some misgivings. ¡°I thought of the various procedures one has to go through after registering a missing-car case,¡± he explained.

He also remembered that he had a GPS tracker installed in the Eeco and that the hiring company was linked to it. ¡°Without wasting time, I called up the company and asked it to share my car¡¯s location with me,¡± Singh said.

He was told that the tracker showed the car active in Dwarka¡¯s Sector 7. ¡°I rushed there, but didn¡¯t find my car. When I called the company again, I learnt my car was running in Pushp Vihar near Saket,¡± Singh narrated. ¡°Without another thought, I headed for Saket.¡±

Half an hour later, when he reached Saket, he figured that it was time he informed the police as he alone wouldn¡¯t be able to nab the culprit and retrieve his car. ¡°After informing the police control room, I received a call from a cop posted at Saket. I also got a call from Hari Nagar police station and police started coordinating with me,¡± Singh said. All this while, he was getting live updates about his car¡¯s location.

The cops the man spoke to weren¡¯t in the vicinity of the car¡¯s GPS location in Saket. But Singh spotted a PCR van and told them about his case. ¡°They decided that I should drive from one direction, they from another, to intercept the Eeco,¡± he said, adding that it was a thrilling experience that he had only seen in movies.

Singh spied the Eeco five minutes later and alerted the cops and the PCR personnel nabbed the car thief, Ashish Kumar, a resident of Sagarpur.
