6 Years Since Nirbhaya Gang Rape, Delhi Police Yet To Install CCTV In The City
The Delhi high court on Thursday directed the police to adhere to an earlier timeline that had been given to install CCTV cameras at police stations and posts.
Delhi has become increasingly unsafe for women. Majority of rapes take place in deserted and secluded areas. After the brutal rape of a medical student shocked the entire world, which later came to be known as the ¡®Nirbhaya gang rape case¡¯, the Delhi High Court has demanded the installation of CCTV cameras to make the capital more safe for women.
The Delhi high court on Thursday directed the police to adhere to an earlier timeline that had been given to install CCTV cameras at police stations and posts. The Times of India reported that a bench headed by justice Sanjiv Khanna and AJ Bhambani have given the police four days to inform of the progress that has been made in this area.
Standing counsel Rahul Mehra told the court that cameras have been installed and were already functioning in 91 police stations. 54 more will be installed by December 15. As for the remaining 57 stations and 53 posts the work will get completed by January 15.
The police also added that installation of cameras in vulnerable areas was underway and the sequence of events will be shared with the bench on the next date of hearing. The HC was also listening to a plea filed by activist Ajay Gautam who alleged that many deaths have taken place inside the police stations only and the absence of proper, functional CCTVs was leading to more and more of such incidents.
Meanwhile the Supreme Court has dismissed a plea demanding immediate execution of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape case.
