School students across India are set to have a unique identification number under the government's 'One Nation, One Student ID' policy.
It is as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 under which the Union ministry of education has planned to create the unique ID called 'Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR)'.
The ministry of education has asked all states and UTs to begin the process of creating APAAR IDs for students.
What is the 'One Nation, One Student ID' policy?
The Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID, created as part of the 'One Nation, One Student ID' policy, is an ID that every student from pre-primary to higher education will have as a lifelong ID number.
In this APAAR ID, students can digitally store all achievements like exam results, learning outcomes, achievements in Olympiad, sports, skill training, etc.
"APAAR and National Credit Framework will be the QR code for learners across India. Every skill they pick up will be credited here," said T G Sitharaman, AICTE chairman.
Why is a student APAAR ID being created?
The APAAR ID will help track students' academic progress and achievements.
Since it is a digital store, students can also easily access the credit score for their higher education or employment purpose.
It will also make transfer from one school to another easy.
How will data be captured on the APAAR ID?
Data captured on the Aadhaar ID will be the basis of the APAAR ID.
But the APAAR ID is separate from the 12-digit Aadhaar ID, and will be in addition to it.
However, the registration for this will be done with parent¡¯s consent only, and the states and UTs have been directed to begin the process for the same.
Government has also assured that the data will stay confidential and will be shared only with government agencies. Further, parents can also withdraw the consent at any time.
"Schools just completed work on students' AADHAAR Card update on UDISE. Now, a new ID card is in the making. We also have to update each student¡¯s height, weight and blood-group on UDISE. This leaves us no time to focus on academics.¡± Pandurang Kengar was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
