The Centre had recently reduced the price of a LPG cylinder by Rs 200, in order to soften the impact of inflation on households, in what is being seen widely as an attempt to win over voters ahead of the general elections in 2024.
Despite the price cut, the rate of an LPG cylinder isn't the same across states.
According to a report by IANS, in Bihar, LPG cylinders are now available at Rs 1,050 compared to Rs 1,250 before the subsidy hike, which is still on a higher side compared to other states.
State-wise price differences of LPG cylinders
Compared to other states like Uttar Pradesh, previously Rs 1140 a cylinder and now Rs 940, Rajasthan Rs 1106 and now Rs 906, Jharkhand Rs 1160 and now Rs 960, Gujarat Rs 1110 and now Rs 910, Delhi Rs 1103 and now Rs 903, Bihar records a high LPG cylinder price.
In other states of the eastern region, LPG cylinders are now priced at Rs 929 in West Bengal and Odisha.
In the northeast, LPG is priced at Rs 952 in Assam, Rs 968.50 in Arunachal Pradesh, Rs 922 in Nagaland and Rs 970 in Meghalaya.
However, other states in the Northeast have a higher price for LPG cylinders, at Rs 1055 in Mizoram, Rs 1,055.50 in Sikkim, Rs 1,063.50 in Tripura, and Rs 1,054.50 in conflict-torn Manipur.
How LPG prices changed in 2023
On Friday, oil marketing companies (OMCs) slashed the prices of commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 158, with effect from September 1. With this change, a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi will now cost Rs 1,522.
Earlier in August, the prices of commercial LPG cylinders were cut by Rs 99.75 by the OMCs.
In July, the prices of commercial LPG gas cylinders were increased by Rs 7 each.
Before this hike, there had been two consecutive price cuts for commercial LPG cylinders in May and June this year. While in May, OMCs reduced the price of a commercial LPG cylinder by Rs 172, in June, it was reduced by Rs 83.
In April, their prices were also reduced by Rs 91.50 per unit.
Earlier on March 1 this year, the prices of commercial LPG cylinders were hiked by Rs 350.50 per unit and domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 50 per unit.
Monthly revisions for both commercial and domestic LPG cylinders occur on the first day of each month.
