Bihar Woman Whose Kidneys Were Stolen At Hospital Demands Transplant Using Doctor's Organ
Sunita Devi, a woman from Bihar's Muzaffarpur whose kidneys were allegedly illegally removed by a hospital, has demanded that the organs of the doctor involved should be transplanted to her. The 38-year-old woman had visited a nursing home in Bariyarpur village in Muzaffarpur district to get her uterus surgically removed on 3 September. But instead, both her kidneys were removed by the doctor without any approval or informing her kin.
Kidneys stolen by hospital
But instead, both her kidneys were removed by the doctor without any approval or informing her kin.
The shocking kidney theft came to light after Devi's condition worsened following the surgery, and she was rushed to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur.
There, to the shock of the family members, doctors told them that Devi's kidneys are missing and that she won't be able to survive without them.
Surviving on dialysis
Since then, Devi has been surviving on regular dialysis at the SKMCH.
¡°Doctors at SKMCH referred Sunita to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna for treatment. She was sent back to this hospital after treatment there. Since Sunita has no kidneys, if she does not have dialysis for even one day, then she could die,¡± Dr BS Jha, superintendent of SKMCH, Muzaffarpur, said.
Doctor, owner of hospital missing
Following a complaint filed by Devi's family, the Police have registered a complaint against Pawan Kumar, the owner of Subhakant Clinic, and Dr R K Singh. They have been absconding since the incident came to light in September.
Police said that the clinic was not registered and the doctor's educational qualification also appears to be fake.
Devi is a mother of three and her husband is a landless labour who has been struggling to make ends meet.
Doctors treating Sunita at IGIMS said her condition is very critical.
Doctor Om Kumar, the head of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant Department at IGIMS, while speaking on the victim's condition, told PTI in September, "She is on regular dialysis and her condition is still critical. She will have to undergo a kidney transplant when her situation improves. Her vitals are being closely monitored."
'Give doctor's kidneys to me'
Devi has been asked to enroll at the IGIMS for an organ transplant, which will be done only when kidneys become available there.
She, however, demanded that the Police should arrest the accused doctor and that his kidneys should be given to her.
"I appeal to the government to immediately arrest the accused doctor who removed my both kidneys. His kidneys should be given to me for transplant so that I could survive," she said.
