Students from schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) dominate in the admission tests for Engineering ¨C Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main and JEE Advanced, a Twitter user claims, swearing by a recently conducted survey.

"India has 15,09,136 schools. However, the number of senior secondary schools is 1,44,088. This explains the drop in students pursuing education after Class 10. Of these, 15,842 are CBSE and 1,19,717 are schools affiliated to state boards. IB, ICSE and unaffiliated are the rest," he adds.

Referring to a survey conducted by Careers 360, a students' career counselling platform, he tweets, "CBSE had 13.04 lakh students across states, writing the Class 12 exams. Tamil Nadu board alone had 8.16 lakh; Maharashtra board had 13.19 lakh; Bihar board had 13.4 lakh and Uttar Pradesh had 29.94 lakh writing the exam. This is for just 4 states to compare with CBSE."

The said survey was conducted of students who got into IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, he said. "These largely took admission in 2020 and 2021. About 1350 responded and the result is shocking. 59% of these students studied CBSE board and 35% studied at a state board school," he writes.

"Putting in perspective, CBSE with 11% schools laid claim to 59% of the seats and State Boards with 83% schools could get only 35% seats. Each percentage of CBSE school gets a 5.37% of seats while State board gets 0.42% seats. The chance in favour of CBSE is 12.78 to 1.0."

"55% of the total seats going to 10% schools"

"This data is consistent with the report released by IIT Kanpur after the 2018 JEE Exams where 6600 students of CBSE secured admission into IITs against a total availability of 11961 seats. That is a staggering 55% of the total seats going to 10% schools."

He further tweets, "The problem gets accentuated when you know that while state boards have many govt schools, about 77% of CBSE schools are private and may offer coaching or has students who can afford coaching. We simply cannot give up fairness & equity in education for greater centralisation."

But, why?

"This is an issue that states must take up to protect their students. With greater centralisation (CAT, JEE, NEET and now CUET), students pursuing education from state boards are losing out big time. Exams for STEM may be justifiable but CUET has many questions and few answers," he writes.

His advice to students

Concluding with his advice for students, Peri said if a student is wanting to be enrolled in India's National institutions like IIT,s NITs, AIIMS, Central Universities etc., they must switch their board, opt for CBSE and stand a better chance.
