Move comes amid rising COVID cases
The move comes amid an alarming spike in COVID-19 cases across India as fear of a second wave of the pandemic looms.
Chief Ministers of several states including Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal and UP's Yogi Adityanath and Punjab's Captain Amarinder Singh had urged the Center to make the COVID-19 vaccines available for all adults.
Last week, Adityanath had said that his government has decided to approach the Union Health Ministry with the proposal for opening the vaccination to the people in the 18-45 years bracket.
¡°The Centre should make vaccines open for all those who are 18 years of age and above. India is producing enough COVID-19 vaccines now to get this done. Walk-in centres should be opened for all. I urge the central government to take this up on a war footing. If this is allowed, we can vaccinate everyone in Delhi in three months,¡± Kejriwal had said.
On Tuesday, Amarinder Singh said asked the Centre to widen the vaccination net to cover those younger than 60.
Eighty-one per cent of the 401 samples sent by the government for genome sequencing have tested positive for the UK variant of COVID-19, Singh had said.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also said that there should be no age restriction for getting the COVID-19 vaccination.
Currently, the two COVID-19 vaccines that are being administered in India are only available for frontline healthcare workers, the elderly, and those about the age of 45 with comorbidities.
