Cyclone Michaung: Deep Depression To Intensify Into Cyclonic Storm, Make Landfall In Andhra On December 5
A depression in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a Deep Depression. The system is expected to continue its movement in the west-northwestward trajectory. It is likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that a depression in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a Deep Depression and is likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm.
On Saturday, the IMD said that the system is expected to continue its movement in the west-northwestward trajectory and evolve into a Cyclonic Storm 'Michaung' over the Southwest Bay of Bengal by December 3.

When will Cyclone Michaung make landfall?
According to the current projection, the cyclonic disturbance will shift northwestwards, reaching the vicinity of south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by the forenoon of December 4.
Cyclone Michaung is expected to move nearly northwards, running parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast, with a projected landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph.

Amid the looming fear of the cyclone over Tamil Nadu, the IMD has warned that the sea will be rougher than usual in the coastal areas.
The sea has gone 100 metres backwards, where the shore's breadth has increased at Velankanni Beach in Nagapattinam district due to the cyclone effect.
The northeast monsoon is intensifying, and heavy rain is taking place in various districts of Tamil Nadu.
Authorities have hoisted 'cyclone warning cage-No-1' in five ports, including Nagapattinam port.
This beach is one of the main tourist spots in Velankanni. The wave that normally touches the shore is about 70-100 metres away from the actual coast.

"From December 3 onwards, winds and rainfall will increase to the North Tamil Nadu coast, and South Andhra coast. While it is moving, the rainfall will start. So light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall chances are there over south coastal Andhra Pradesh," Sunanda, the Managing Director at Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, said.

As per IMD, the rainfall intensity in North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry would increase from December 3, with rainfall at most places, heavy to very heavy rainfall at few places, and isolated extremely heavy rainfall. Rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, is likely on December 4 and decrease thereafter.

How Puducherry is preparing
In Puducherry, the UT administration has declared a holiday for all schools in Karaikal and Yanam regions on December 4 in view of cyclone Michaung.
Director of School Education P Priyatarshiny said in a Friday release that cyclone Michaung is expected to hit the coastal regions on December 4, and all schools will remain closed on that day.
