Ever since it emerged that Anjali Singh, the 20-year-old Delhi hit-and-run victim was not alone on her scooter at the time of the fatal accident on New Year's eve, the conduct of her 'friend', Nidhi, has been questionable.
For more than a day, Nidhi, who escaped with minor injuries after the accident, remained silent on what happened to her 'friend' in front of her eyes.
Nidhi's questionable behaviour and claims
After she was traced, Nidhi recorded her statement to a magistrate and told the media that Anjali was heavily drunk at the time of the accident.
She further said that they had fought over who will drive and Anjali who insisted on driving, had almost hit another truck earlier.
The revelations were met with disbelief by many, including Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal who questioned Nidhi's behaviour and even demanded a probe against her.
The family of Anjali had also hit out Nidhi's claims and went on to say that they had never seen or heard of Nidhi before.
Nidhi's mother doesn't recognise Anjali
Now, Sudesh, Nidhi's mother, has also said that she is unaware of her daughter's friendship with Anjali.
Speaking to ANI, Sudesh said she was unaware that Nidhi had gone to a party.
"Nidhi did not tell me that she was going to a party. She had just told me that she is going to Shelly's house," she said.
She also said that her daughter was terrified after the accident, so she did not report the matter to the police.
"You would have got scared seeing Nidhi's condition, she was so terrified," she said.
Never heard of a friend called Nidhi
Earlier, the mother of Anjali had rejected Nidhi's claims that her daughter was drunk at the time of the accident.
"I don't know Nidhi. I have never seen her. Anjali never used to drink. She never came home in an inebriated state. We don't buy what Nidhi is claiming," she said.
She also questioned how Nidhi left the incident spot if she was, indeed, Anjali's friend. She termed the incident a "well-thought-out conspiracy".
"Nidhi is saying all the wrong things. If Nidhi was my daughter's friend, as she claims, why did she leave her alone? This is a well-thought-out conspiracy. Nidhi might be involved in it. There should be a proper investigation into her claims," she said.
Anjali was not drunk: kin
Anjali's uncle also said she did not have a drinking habit and her friend is lying.
"My niece did not have a drinking habit. If she was drunk that night (when the incident happened), as per Nidhi's claim, then the postmortem report would have mentioned that. It means Nidhi is lying," he said.
Two more men booked by Delhi Police
In a related development, the Delhi Police on Thursday said that two more people have emerged as suspects in the incident that took place in Delhi's Kanjhawala on New Year's night.
Addressing a press conference today Special Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Delhi Police Sagar Preet Hooda said the men are Ashutosh, the owner of the car, and Ankush, the brother of one of the accused.
After the analysis of CCTV and CDR, we have not found any connection between the accused and the deceased. The accused were aware that there is a human body under the car.
