Delhi's Rising COVID Cases Combined With Hospitals' Crisis Pushing System On Brink Of Collapse
While on one hand, the daily toll of coronavirus cases is on the rise from the past 3 days, on the other hand, the crisis in hospitals sees no end.
The healthcare situation in Delhi seems to be on the edge. While on one hand, the daily toll of coronavirus cases is on the rise from the past 3 days, on the other hand, the crisis in hospitals sees no end.
Doctors, paramedics from three big hospitals have been protesting in Delhi over pending salaries since June this year. After failing to get attention from concerned authorities, the staff decided to go on an indefinite strike, starting October 19.
Sporting black armbands and shouting slogans, several resident doctors of hospitals run by the North Delhi civic body staged a protest over salary dues at Jantar Mantar here on Thursday.
Protests continue
Wearing masks, doctors from Hindu Rao Hospital, Kasturba Hospital and Rajen Babu Tuberculosis Hospital held placards and appealed to higher authorities to intervene and resolve the crisis.
On Friday, resident doctors of Hindu Rao even blocked all the entry and exit gates of the hospital since morning 7am.
They also blocked OPD barring patients, doctors or staff to enter or exit the hospital, chanting slogans in what began as a silent protest.

More than a hundred resident doctors and paramedical staff from all the three North Delhi Municipal Corporation-run hospitals are on an indefinite strike from the past 12 days. Around 250 resident doctors from Hindu Rao had begun a daily three-hour pen down strike from September 22 within the hospital premises. On October 10, they went on a complete indefinite strike to press for their demands.
The medical staff including doctors, nurses, lab staff and other hospital workers haven't received the salaries since June.
The cash-strapped civic body had earlier this month said it didn¡¯t have enough funds and had sought time till November-end to pay off the dues. Services at the hospitals have been affected because of the strike.
Meanwhile, Delhi has seen a sudden surge in the daily number of COVID cases. With number of cases going up per day, Delhi saw a spike of 3886 cases, which was the highest after 26 days on October 21. Delhi's overall tally stands at more than 340,000 cases along with over 6000 deaths.
