'Dowry Not Enough': Telangana Tribal Woman Calls Off Wedding, Hours Before She Was To Tie The Knot

Men demanding dowry and even going to call off weddings at the last moment because they did not get as much as they expected is not uncommon in our country.

But in an unusual turn of events, a woman from Telangana called off her wedding because she felt that the dowry she got from her groom was less.

Groom's side pays dowry

The woman, a resident of Bhadradri Kothagudem, was to tie the knot to a man from Ghatkesar, a town on the outskirts of Hyderabad, on Thursday.

Both the bride and groom were members of a tribal community and as per their custom, the boy's side has to pay the dowry to the prospective bride.

The groom's side had paid Rs 2 lakhs as dowry to the bride's family and the wedding was to take place on March 10 in Ghatkesar.

Wedding called off at last moment

The bride's family was camping in a hotel in Ghatkesar and even after the preparations were completed and guests started arriving, they did not show up at the wedding venue.

Concerned, the groom's side went to the hotel, where they were told the wedding wouldn't happen.

The bride's family told the groom's kin that the girl was demanding more money as dowry, and the wedding will go ahead if it was paid.

Bride's family returns dowry

Shocked by this, the groom's family approached the police.

After the intervention of the cops, the bride's family agreed to return the Rs 2 lakhs they had received as dowry.

According to the police, the two sides were let off after counselling, as the groom's family did not file a formal complaint.

Wedding called off because lehanga not expensive enough

In November 2022, a similar incident was reported from Uttarakhand's Haldwani, where a bride called off the wedding because she was not given an expensive lehenga.

According to the bride, the lehenga that the groom's family had purchased for her cost only Rs. 10,000, but she wanted a more expensive one.

Shocked by this, the groom's father even gave his ATM card to the bride to buy the lehenga of her choice, but even this failed to soothe her.

What does the law say about dowry?

It should be noted that as per the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961, both giving and taking dowry is an illegal and punishable offence.

The punishment for violating the anti-dowry law is imprisonment for up to 5 years and a fine of Rs. 15,000 or the value of the dowry given, whichever is more.

The act defines dowry as any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly by one party to a marriage to the other party at/before or any time after the marriage.
