In the midst of the appraisal season, a time when employees eagerly anticipate raises and rewards for their hard work, one Indian employee found herself facing a devastating blow. Working at what many consider a dream company¡ªTesla¡ªshe poured her dedication into the role for seven years. Yet, in a sudden turn of events, her hopes were shattered as she was unexpectedly laid off.
Laid off via cold email a month after promotion
Jatin Saini, an employee at the advertising agency House of Creators, shared his sister's story on LinkedIn. She had dedicated seven years of her life to working at Tesla, only to be unexpectedly laid off last Friday.
The way she received the news was truly heart-wrenching. It came in the form of a cold email stating, "Unfortunately as a result, your position has been eliminated by this restructuring."

The manner in which she was informed added to the pain.
Just a month prior, she had been celebrating a well-deserved promotion and was excited to relocate from New Jersey to Washington DC. Saini vividly recalls the joy their family felt for her during this time.
However, on May 3, 2024, her hopes were dashed when she discovered her office access card had been deactivated upon her arrival.
He writes, "She's been with Tesla for over half a decade and to find out like this.. When you can't enter your own office; Your entire team is down and out; Your ID card is thrown away."
"They made her feel like an outsider with just 1 email," Saini adds.
Saini questions the lack of transparency, empathy, and consideration throughout the process.
He believes that in situations like these, where layoffs are necessary, it's more humane to make the cuts swiftly rather than prolonging the uncertainty with multiple rounds of smaller layoffs.
In closing, he reflects, "It¡¯s a clear reminder of the cost behind corporate decisions."
Just one among thousands of recent lay-offs
Saini is just one of many employees who have had to face layoffs recently. On the same day Saini's sister lost her job, 75% of her team received the same email.
On April 15, Tesla let go of 15,000 employees. It's not just Tesla¡ªother big companies are in the same situation.
Earlier this month, Google made significant changes to its "Core" teams, leading to over 200 employees being laid off and some roles being transferred to India and Mexico.
