Made-in-India Pixel phones
Google has told suppliers to start making its Pixel smartphones in India by the next quarter at the earliest, Nikkei Asia has reported.
Initially, Google will prepare the production line for its high-end Pixel 8 Pro, followed by manufacturing in the April-June quarter, the report said.
The first production line will be in South India, and the report added that Google will also produce Pixel 8 smartphones in North India around the middle of this year.
Growing list of smartphones made in India
Several top smartphone makers including Apple, its arch rival Samsung, and Chinese brands like Oppo and Xiaomi are already making a large chunk of their devices in India.
In 2023, Google had announced that its first made-in-India Pixel phones will be available this year.
Brands want to end dependence on China
Like other smartphone makers, Google has also been striving to diversify its supply chain away from China, which for a long time had been the manufacturing hub of the world.
But as tensions rise between the US and China, smartphone makers have been trying to move some of their production out of the country to India and Vietnam.
"Google¡¯s decision to move part of its Pixel phone production to Vietnam was prompted by the U.S.-China trade war. As for its extension into manufacturing in India, we believe the company also takes into account the country's investment incentives, import tariff policies, as well as its massive domestic market,¡± Eddie Han, research director of Isaiah Research, told Nikkei Asia.
Taiwanese Contract manufacturer Foxconn, which assembles most of these devices for these brands already has massive production facilities in India, and has promised to invest more in the country.
Smartphone market in India
As per IDC data, the Indian smartphone market grew 1 per cent to 146 million units in 2023, with the second half of the year seeing an 11 per cent increase over the previous year.
