Heat Wave: Summer Vacation In Delhi Schools To Start On May 11

The Directorate of Education (DOE) issued the Delhi School Calendar 2024 giving the vacation schedule for the upcoming summer break for all government and government-aided schools in Delhi.

According to the calendar, instead of the one-month summer break, this year, schools in the national capital will have holidays for one month and 19 days.

Summer vacation for Delhi schools

The 2024 summer vacation will start from May 11 and continue till June 30. Students will also be given projects and assignments during this break.

This will mean that schools in Delhi will remain open for 220 days in the 2024 academic year. The DOE has directed all schools to ensure that studies are conducted over all 220 days and that holidays are planned accordingly.

Heat waves in north and central India

The extended summer vacation in Delhi coincides with the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) prediction of heat waves in Central and Northern India.

The intensity of heat is expected to be the highest in May-June, especially over Central India.

In its summer forecast, the IMD had said that there was a high probability that certain regions will experience 10-20 days of heat waves between April and June, compared to the usual 4-8 days.

Last week, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had directed states and Union territories to chalk out a plan to mitigate heat wave impact.

Advisory on heat waves

"Timely, advance and wide awareness among the people on the preventive measures will hugely support in reducing the severe impact of such heat waves," the minister said.

Since the beginning of April, temperatures of 40 to 42 degrees Celsius have been recorded in many parts of the country, due to which the risk of heat stroke has increased, Mandaviya said.

He stressed on taking special care of children and the elderly at home.

In case of symptoms of heat stroke, one should go to nearest community health centre, Ayushman Mandir, or consult a doctor in the district hospital, Mandaviya said.

An advisory on heat waves was issued to all the states by the Ministry of Health on February 29, along with which the action plan prepared by the National Centre for Disease Control for the states and Do's and Don'ts for the general public were shared.
