Declared Brain Dead, 13-year-old Himachal Girl Gives New Lease Of Life To Six Patients

All of 13 years old, a girl from Himachal Pradesh gave a new lease of life to six patients through transplantation of her heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas and corneas at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).
Muskan Grover who was declared brain dead at PGIMER donated her organs following an accident on April 2. Showing exemplary courage and magnanimity, the family of Muskan did not let her tragic death go in vain and agreed to organ donation when the transplant coordinators raised the matter with them.
All transplants done within 2 days
The retrieved heart was transplanted to a matching recipient admitted in MGN Healthcare Chennai and liver, kidneys and pancreas were transplanted in Chandigarh's PGIMER. The retrieved corneas restored the sight of two more corneal blind patients at the institute.
The PGIMER nephrology and hepatology departments also identified several potential recipients who were asked to report at the earliest. The cross-match led to identification of three recipients for the donated liver, kidney and combined pancreas and kidney. All transplants were completed by April 4.

Prof Surjit Singh, director of PGIMER, stated: ¡°Amid tragic demise of one¡¯s own child, thinking beyond to save some strangers¡¯ lives is unexpected and unimaginable. But the family of Muskan had this exemplary courage to do something for society even when their own world crashed. We feel deeply indebted to them.¡±

A 40-year-old software professional in Bengaluru in Karnataka and a resident of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, Eshwar Kumar was declared brain-dead by doctors on March 19, after he suffered a brain haemorrhage.
However, Kumar's family showed courage to come forward and donate his organs; liver, heart valve and corneas. Kumar suffered a chronic kidney failure in 2012, after which his mother donated one of her kidneys to the son.
But, he suffered organ rejection and was waiting for a cadaver kidney donation for the past 9 years. Kumar was declared brain-dead by the doctors, following which he himself became a cadaver organ donor.
Similarly, organ donation by a woman saved five patients with the donation of her heart, two kidneys, liver, and corneas.
Savitha N, 40 , a resident of Nanjangud was admitted to Apollo BGS Hospitals in the city on February 18 with complaints of basal ganglia haemorrhage. She underwent craniotomy.
As her condition worsened, she was shifted to ICU for life support and intensive care. She was kept on life support for two days while she was in a very critical state. On March 9, she was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure.
