Humiliated over alleged corruption during farewell, Kerala government official dies by suicide

A government official in Kerala has died by suicide, a day after he was humiliated in public during a send-off function organised by his colleagues. Naveen Babu, who was the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Kannur, was found dead inside his quarters on Tuesday.

ADM dies by suicide

Babu, who had been transferred to Pathanamthitta, was scheduled to take charge on Tuesday, but when he did not show up to work, his family and friends started looking for him and found him dead inside his quarters.

According to colleagues, Babu took the extreme step due to the harassment of P.P. Divya, the Kannur District Panchayat President, who created a scene during his farewell the previous day.

Corruption allegation in farewell meeting

Divya, who was not invited to Babu's farewell, which was held on Monday, used the function to make corruption allegations against the ADM.

The District Panchayat President, belonging to the ruling CPI(M), criticised the ADM for delaying the approval of a petrol pump in Chengalai for several months.

Divya accused the ADM of granting approval only two days after being transferred and hinted that she knew the reasons behind this sudden approval.

Allegation against ADM

Prashant, the owner of the fuel pump, had alleged that he had paid around Rs 1 lakh to the ADM for a NoC, after the official delayed the approval for months, demanding a bribe.

Prashant also told local media that he had informed Divya about the incident and added that she had advised him to file a complaint.

Following the death of the ADM, his colleagues on Tuesday held a protest seeking action against Divya. They also demanded that she should be booked for homicide.
