The first squadron deliveries are expected to be complete by the end of this year. Parts of the Russian missile system had started reaching India earlier this month and the unit is expected to be operationalized in the next few weeks, government sources told ANI. India¡¯s S-400 deal
The S-400 air defence system was contracted for by India in a deal worth around Rs 35,000 crore and five squadrons would be provided to India for tacking air threats from up to 400 km.
What is S-400?
Considered one of the most advanced and potent air defence systems in the world, The S-400 Triumph (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) was developed by Almaz Central Design Bureau of Russia.
S-400 Triumph features
The S-400 Triumph air defence system integrates a multifunction radar, autonomous detection and targeting systems, anti-aircraft missile systems, launchers, and command and control centre.
Equipped with four different missiles
The S-400 missile defence system is equipped with four different missiles which can engage enemy aircraft, ballistic missiles, and AWACS planes at 400 km, 250 km, the medium-range 120 km and the short-range 40 km.
Command-and-control system
Each unit has two batteries, each of which has a command-and-control system, a surveillance radar, an engagement radar and four lunch trucks.
Upgrade of S-300
The S-400 is an upgraded version of the S-300 and was previously available only to the Russian defense forces. It is manufactured by Almaz-Antey and has been in service in Russia since 2007.

The S-400 missile system entered service in April 2007 and the first S-400 was deployed in combat in August 2007.
