An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Mumbai had to return to the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday, soon after it took off, following complaints by some passengers about a stench inside the aircraft.
According to reports, Flight 6E449 took off from IGI Airport in the early hours of Friday, but soon had to turn back to the foul smell.
Passengers struggled for 30 minutes
According to Dr. Binu Varghese, a Twitter user, who posted videos from inside the flight, passengers experienced a 30-minute ordeal in which they were forced to endure poor air quality.
He also claimed that when some passengers who claimed they were almost choking, tried to find out from the crew, they were not given any replies and were asked not to click photos or videos.
Video goes viral
In the videos posted by Varghese, a passenger can be seen in a near-collapsed state, while others are heard complaining about not being able to breathe.
In another video, passengers are seen leaving the aircraft.
Alternate flight arranged for passengers
In a statement, an IndiGo spokesperson confirmed that the flight (6E449) returned to Delhi due to a ¡®momentary foul smell¡¯.
The pilot, following standard operating procedures, landed back in Delhi as a precaution, and an alternate aircraft was arranged for the passengers flying to Mumbai.
"An alternate aircraft was arranged for the passengers. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to all the passengers," the airline said
Reacting to the incident, some fliers took to social media to narrate similar plight they had undergone, ostensibly due to certain cost-saving factors indulged in by the carriers.
Recently at least two incidents had come to light where IndiGo passengers had complained that their seat cushion was missing.
IndiGo had also recently courted controversy after passengers of a Goa-Delhi flight were seen sitting on the Mumbai airport tarmac in protest after their flight was delayed.
