Goyal said, "I started Zomato 16 years ago in 2008."
He shared that 16 years ago, his father had expressed doubts about his decision to launch a startup, essentially questioning his capabilities by reminding him of their small-town roots in Punjab.
This skepticism from his father highlighted the challenges and uncertainties Goyal faced at the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey.
"My dad at that time told me 'Janta hai tera baap kaun hai?' And, his point was, 'You can't do a startup.' Right.. And¡ I come from a small town in Punjab¡ that's the background", Deepinder Goyal adds.
Goyal noted that over the last 16 years, the startup landscape in India has transformed significantly, particularly in the past seven to ten years.
He credited the government for fostering this positive change and expressed his gratitude for their efforts in improving the startup climate.

Deepinder Goyal's journey to success
Deepinder Goyal was born into a humble family in Muktsar, Punjab.
He completed his schooling at DAV College, Chandigarh, before enrolling in the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 2001. He graduated in 2005 with a B.Tech degree in Mathematics and Computing.
Goyal's entrepreneurial journey began while he was working at Bain & Company, where he noticed his colleagues struggling to order food from restaurants. This observation led him to recognise the need for an online food delivery platform that provided comprehensive information about restaurants.
In 2008, he and his colleague Pankaj Chaddah launched Foodiebay.com to address this gap and in 2010, Foodiebay.com rebranded to Zomato.com.
Soon, Zomato became a household name in India's food delivery sector as the company's innovative approach and user-friendly platform helped it gain immense popularity.
