Rape Cases Highest In Country Because Women Don't Wear Hijab, Claims Karnataka MLA
Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed said the rape rate is highest in India because some women dont wear hijab. Hijab means parda veil in Islam It is for hiding the beauty of girls when they come of age he said.
Amid the hijab row in Karnataka's schools and colleges, a Congress MLA in the state claimed that the rate is highest in India because some women don't wear hijab.
"Hijab means 'parda' (veil) in Islam. It is for hiding the beauty of girls when they come of age. Today you can see that the rape rate is the highest in our country. What do you think is the reason for this? The reason is that several women don't wear hijab," said the MLA, Zameer Ahmed.
Going further with his atrocious logic, the Congress MLA, speaking to news agency ANI, said, "But, wearing hijab is not compulsory, only those who want to protect themselves and those who don't want to show their beauty to everyone wear it. This has been in practice for years."

Zameer is not the first political leader to make such misogynistic remarks blaming women's attire for men going astray and harassing them.
Four days ago, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai's political secretary MP Renukacharya made a regressive statement that women should not wear attire that 'excite and provoke men'.
Many on social media have criticised his remarks.
Earlier, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan said the hijab is not intrinsic to the practice of Islam.
He stated that the argument that Sikhs are allowed to wear turbans while Muslim women are being banned from wearing hijabs in some colleges and schools is ¡°preposterous¡±.
¡°In Sikhism, the turban is considered and accepted as essential to the religion. On the other hand, hijab in the context of women¡¯s dress finds no mention in the Quran,¡± he said.
The Karnataka hijab row erupted after a group of young Muslim students were not permitted to enter their college in Udupi on account of wearing hijabs. The issue spread across the state as more colleges and schools issued similar diktats.
