According to the SDMC, the decision was taken after receiving numerous complaints from residents. Officials said sanitation inspectors and field workers of the corporation¡¯s health department will be tasked with identifying and penalising violators.
¡°This will discourage those who let their pets defecate in the open. The practice creates obstacles in the Swachh Bharat initiative, apart from affecting the health of residents,¡± SDMC Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat said.
Other than littering roads and parks, this also causes health risks to people living nearby the parks and roads, SDMC officials noted.

Many, however, have questioned how practical the move would be, as the civic body is already facing a staff shortage.
Additionally, they say there is no proper mechanism for people to register complaints or to ensure that pet owners and animal rights activists who take care of stray dogs are not harassed.
