New LPG Prices for Domestic Users
Starting April 8, the price of a standard 14.2-kg LPG cylinder will rise from Rs 803 to Rs 853 for non-Ujjwala users. For those under the Ujjwala Yojana scheme, the new rate will be Rs 550 per cylinder.
This latest LPG price hike affects millions of households across the country who depend on cooking gas for their daily meals. The price of LPG cooking gas has been under pressure due to increasing international fuel rates.
Commercial LPG Cylinder Prices Were Cut Last Week
Interestingly, just last week, the government had reduced the prices of commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 41. This reduction was a relief for hotels, restaurants, and other commercial establishments that rely heavily on LPG. However, this cut only applied to commercial users, and not domestic ones.
Why the LPG Price Hike Now?

According to the minister, the main reason behind the LPG price hike is the sharp increase in international prices. The global rate of LPG surged from $415 per metric tonne to $712 per metric tonne. Despite this, the government and oil marketing companies (OMCs) had not passed on the cost to Indian customers for quite some time.
However, to manage the growing losses and adjust to international market changes, the Rs 50 LPG cylinder price hike was introduced. The government said that this adjustment only covers current losses, not the past backlog.
LPG Prices Will Be Reviewed Every 15 Days
Hardeep Singh Puri also shared that LPG prices will now be reviewed every 15 days. The government will monitor international trends closely and revise the prices of cooking gas cylinders accordingly. This means there could be more changes〞up or down〞in the coming weeks.
Huge Losses for Oil Companies Due to Cooking Gas Subsidy
The minister revealed that OMCs suffered an under-recovery of Rs 41,338 crore last year alone due to subsidised LPG prices. To cover this massive gap, the government plans to seek additional financial help from the Finance Ministry.
No Impact on Petrol and Diesel Prices for Now
While the excise duty on petrol and diesel has gone up by Rs 2 per litre, the minister assured that this hike will not be passed on to consumers at the pump. The final retail prices will be adjusted by the oil companies depending on global oil trends.
Currently, the excise duty stands at Rs 13 per litre for petrol and Rs 10 per litre for diesel.
India*s Dependence on Imported LPG
India relies on imports for over 60% of its domestic LPG demand. That means the LPG cylinder price in India is directly linked to international market prices. While the government tries to shield consumers from price shocks, global fluctuations still impact what households end up paying for cooking gas.
With the LPG cylinder price hike set to start from April 8, households will need to adjust their budgets accordingly. The government*s move to increase the price of LPG cooking gas by Rs 50 per cylinder is aimed at dealing with rising global fuel costs and supporting the country's struggling oil companies.
As the situation is now under close watch, consumers can expect cooking gas prices to change more frequently depending on global trends. It*s important to stay updated on the latest LPG price hikes and plan accordingly.
