Man Allegedly Assaults Newborn Girl Doubting Her Parentage, Baby Admitted To Hospital With Bleeding Brain

The police arrested the accused, whose name is Shaiju Thomas and he is from Kannur. He is booked under the Juvenile Justice Act and Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. He lives in Angamaly area¡¯s Josepuram with his wife, older sister and mother. His wife has her roots in Nepal. What happened came to light when the family took the critically-injured newborn to a hospital for treatment. The baby was first taken to a local hospital and then to Kolenchery MOSC Medical College Hospital.
According to a TOI report, at the time of hospitalisation, the baby girl had bleeding in the brain and a low count of haemoglobin. A senior doctor told TOI that they grew suspicious and informed the police as the child¡¯s father had changed his statements multiple times. He said, ¡°The father at first said that the child was sleeping on the edge of the bed and when they woke up the child was found on the floor. Later, he said that he saw a mosquito biting the child and when he hit it, the child fell off the bed.¡±
Later, the police called in a translator and interrogated the baby girl¡¯s mother. She stated that her husband used to mistreat their daughter. He would often slap her if she cried. She also revealed that the child lost consciousness after being hit on her head and thrown on to the bed by the accused.
According to the initial investigation, the accused would often raise doubts about the newborn¡¯s parentage. He has difficulty in managing anger. After getting drunk, he used to thrash his sister and wife.
