In the first stage, the trachea, which was donated by the relatives of a brain-dead patient, was embedded in the recipient¡¯s forearm after stripping it of all cells. The second phase will be performed in six weeks, after ensuring complete acceptance of the implanted trachea by the recipient¡¯s body.
Medical experts said such a surgery is very complicated and extremely rare. This is only the second instance in the world where a windpipe surgery has been carried out successfully.
