MP & UP Are Most Unsafe For Women, And Leaders From These Two States Sit Idle In Parliament

With the poll campaign for general elections gathering storm, the political discourse in the country is dominated by relatively bizarre issues such as Chowkidar, Namdar, Kamdar and an "all-weather" Hindu-Muslim issue; the real issues on which the general election should get contested have clearly taken the backseat.

The issues like safety of women, employment, farmer suicide, agrarian distress are nowhere to be seen in the campaign of either of the parties and this is the case when there have been reports that the unemployment rate in the country is highest in last 45 years.

IndiaTimes here attempts to bring the election back to real issues. But what about the people whom we had elected in 2014? Did they raise the voice of the people in the parliament? Well, it¡¯s a very subjective issue.

For instance safety of women is one of the major issues in the country and Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh respectively are the most unsafe states for women in India as according to the NCRB report 2016, the maximum number of rape cases were registered in these two states.

Yet out of 109 (80 for UP and 29 for MP), Members of Parliament (MPs) in both these states, only a handful asked questions about women safety or crime against women in the Parliament. Yes, you read it right.

In last five years, roughly 70 questions were asked or raised in the Lok Sabha about ¡°rapes¡± and ¡°crime against women¡± but only 3 MPs from Madhya Pradesh and six from Uttar Pradesh have brought up this issue in parliament. Rest 100 odd MPs had been having a good time in the parliament and the bungalows allotted to them.

The numbers

According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report in 2016, a total of 338,000 incidents of crime against women were recorded in 2016 against the total of 329,000 crimes against women in 2015.

Rape is the most heinous of the crimes and it¡¯s seeing a surge in India. A total of 38,947 rapes were reported in 2016, compared to 34,651 in 2015. Both Madhya Pradesh (4,882) and Uttar Pradesh (4,816) are the top two states in the country in terms of rape cases.

Maharashtra is at third spot with a total of 4,189 rape cases reported in 2016, it¡¯s MPs, however, have raised the issue several times in Parliament.

PM Narendra Modi, MEA Sushma Swaraj, Sonia Gandhi, Maneka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Varun Gandhi, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Uma Bharti, Dimple Yadav, Yogi Adityanath (he later resigned and became CM), Kamal Nath (he also resigned later to be the CM), Jyotiraditya Scindia, and the Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan- all these are perhaps the biggest politicians in this country and except for Yogi Adityanth and Jyotiraditya Scindia, none of the above ever asked or answered a single question about the state of women security in their constituency.

But, there are some who raised their voice

While CM Yogi Adityanath, while he was the MP from Gorakhpur, raised voice twice in the parliament rest of the biggies chose to remain silent throughout the sessions in the last five years. Kunwar Pushpendra Singh Chandel from Hamirpur, Shyama Charan Gupta from Allahabad,

Neelam Sonkar from Laganj, Anupriya Patel from Mirzapur, Rajesh Pandey from Kushi Nagar are some of the MPs in UP, who raised their concern regarding women security in the parliament.

Another general election is around the corner and we have another chance to elect our representative in the parliament. Let's elect a candidate who is sane, responsible and sensitive enough to raise our voice where it matter-the Parliament.
