Mukesh Dalal, the BJP candidate from Surat, Gujarat has created history by becoming the first person to be declared winner in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Dalal was on Monday elected unopposed from the Surat Lok Sabha seat as all other remaining candidates withdrew from the fray.
How Mukesh Dalal became MP before vote
The candidature of the Congress' Nilesh Kumbhani was rejected a day earlier after the district returning officer prima facie found discrepancies in the signature of the proposers. The nomination form of Suresh Padsala, the Congress' "substitute" candidate from Surat, was also invalidated, leaving just seven independents in the fray.
"I declare that Mukeshkumar Chandrakant Dalal, sponsored by the BJP, has been duly elected to fill the seat in the House from Surat parliamentary constituency," election officer Saurabh Pardhi told reporters, after handing over the certificate of election to Dalal on Monday.
Who is Mukesh Dalal
The 63-year-old who has previously served as a corporator for Surat Municipal Corporation, a member of the Surat District Cricket Association committee, and chairman of People¡¯s Cooperative Bank in Surat has been elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time.
He is also the first candidate to be elected unopposed from Gujarat since its formation 64 years ago though and the first BJP candidate to become a Lok Sabha MP without a contest.
Lok Sabha election in Gujarat
Gujarat which has 26 Lok Sabha seats will vote on May 7 in a single phase.
A total of 265 candidates are in the fray for 25 out of 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat, an official said on Monday, which was the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
Between April 12 and 19, a total of 433 candidates submitted nomination forms for 26 Lok Sabha seats. During the scrutiny process held on April 20 and 21, the nomination forms of 105 Lok Sabha candidates were rejected, taking the number down to 328. After 62 eligible Lok Sabha candidates withdrew their nomination forms till Monday, 266 candidates were left.
