One of the most unique features of the Varkala is its cliffs.
Varkala Beach is the only place in southern Kerala where the cliffs guard the sea.
According to geologists, these tertiary sedimentary formation cliffs are unique geological features. It is a geology monument which is called `Varkala Formation¡¯ among geologists.

Varkala Beach is also surrounded by a thick line of coconut palms and blessed with an idyllic serenity, making it a perfect getaway spot.

On Friday, Kerala Tourism also opened a floating bridge and other water sports activities on Varkala Beach. The bridge, measuring 100 meters in length and three meters in width is accessible to around 100 visitors simultaneously.
Religious significance of Papanasham
Varkala Beach is not just a tourist spot but also has religious significance. It is called Papanasham (destroyer of sins) because it is believed that taking a dip in the waters there will wash away all the sins.
The ashes collected from the cremation grounds are immersed in the sea, in the belief that it will wash away the sins of the deceased and the soul will achieve moksha (eternal salvation).

Varkala railway station is the nearest railway station which is 3 kilometers from the Beach.
The nearest airport is the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport which is at a distance of 51 kilometers.
Varkala is located 40 km away from Thiruvananthapuram and is well-connected with all other major cities in the district.
