Diamonds in noodle packets
During a routine check at Mumbai airport, Indian customs officials intercepted a traveler bound for Bangkok.
Upon inspection of his trolley bag, they discovered packets of noodles concealing diamonds worth a staggering Rs 2 crores.
Additionally, the Customs department seized gold hidden in various body parts and baggage of other passengers, amounting to a total value of Rs 6.46 crore.
Subsequently, the passenger attempting to smuggle the diamonds was arrested.
Another traveler arriving from Colombo was found with gold bars concealed in her undergarments, weighing 321 grams.
Furthermore, 10 Indian nationals arriving from various locations including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Riyadh, Muscat, Bangkok, and Singapore were intercepted, carrying 6.199 kg of gold valued at ?4.04 crore, hidden in their rectum, on their bodies, and inside their baggage.
Gold and diamond smuggling in India
In January of this year, a significant diamond smuggling operation, amounting to a staggering Rs 7.77 crore, was uncovered simultaneously in Bengaluru and Hyderabad on January 10, 2024.
India's recorded annual gold imports officially stand at approximately 700 tonnes, valued at around $44.8 billion.
However, reports suggest that smuggled gold amounts to a substantial 200-300 tonnes per year, with an estimated worth of $19.2 billion.
Smuggled gold enters the country through various routes, including air, sea, and roads, and is often disguised in different forms such as bars, powder or dust, and paste.
