Since April 12, Delhi-NCR Has Felt 18 Earthquakes, 8 Of Which Have Been In Rohtak. Here's Why

Since April, the Delhi-NCR has witnessed multiple tremors. According to report in PTI, a total of 18 quakes have been recorded in the region, eight of which have taken place in Rohtak.

On Wednesday, Rohtak recorded a low-intensity earthquake of magnitude 2.8, the National Centre for Seismology said. The tremors in and around Delhi have been frequent for quite some time now.

According to a report in Jagran English quoting professor Chandan Ghosh of IIT Jammu, he believes Delhi is close to the Himalayas, which was formed by mixing of tectonic plates such as India and Eurasia, and due to the movement in these plates, areas like Delhi-NCR, Kanpur and Lucknow are the most prone to earthquakes.

However, it is also being said that small earthquakes may also reduce the chances of a major earthquake. The Delhi Ridge region is a low danger area, while the medium risk areas are - South West, North West and West. The most threatened areas are the North Eastern region.

Professor Ghosh said that at present there is no scientific basis to reach to a conclusion based on fault line movement, ground vibration, building response in Delhi-NCR.

As per a report in Zee News, Dr Soumitra Mukherjee, professor of Geology at Jawaharlal Nehru University also explained the case of Delhi and why these tremors are felt.

"There is an ancient rock group under the land of Delhi. It is said to be of the Precambrian period, which consists of quartzite, cyst, granite or pegmatite group. If we talk about seismic zonation of India, Delhi falls in Zone 4, which is sensitive. That is, there is a high probability of earthquakes here, but even more sensitive areas come in the areas of the Himalayas, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, North East. Delhi has a large population, so even mild shocks make people restless", she said.

The only matter of relief for Delhi is that there is no prediction of any big earthquake made yet. The advantage of three to four small tremors is that the accumulated energy of the earth is removed which eliminates the possibility of a dangerous earthquake.
