Swiggy's policy of charging delivery agents for bags and T-shirts sparks online debate
This incident follows recent headlines about Swiggy increasing its platform fees. Zomato, another major player in the food delivery market, has also raised its fees.
An X post highlighting Swiggy's policies for its delivery agents has ignited a heated online debate. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union criticised the food delivery giant for charging its workers for mandatory uniforms, including t-shirts, bags, and raincoats, which feature Swiggy's branding.
Delivery partners pay for 'Swiggy Kit'
The post included screenshots showing the prices of these items: a Swiggy raincoat costs Rs 749, while a bag costs Rs 299 after a discount from the original Rs 899. Additionally, a "Swiggy Kit," which includes two shirts and a bag, is priced at Rs 1199.
Dear @Swiggy why are delivery workers being charged for a bag, Raincoat and t-shirt that advertise your brand? If it's promoting #swiggy, they shouldn't have to pay for it. pic.twitter.com/CByw0sei0B

Another screenshot reveals Swiggy's directive mandating agents to use the branded bag, with penalties for non-compliance. The directive emphasizes, "Carrying Swiggy bags to ensure hygienic deliveries is of utmost importance." Furthermore, agents are required to purchase replacements if their bags are damaged or lost. The caption of the post reads, "Dear @Swiggy, why are delivery workers being charged for a bag, Raincoat and t-shirt that advertise your brand? If it's promoting #Swiggy, they shouldn't have to pay for it."
