Tamil Nadu is set for a massive boost in its road network with the construction of 963 km of four-lane national highways over the next two years. This development aims to improve road connectivity and ease traffic congestion across the state.
Reports suggest that the number of toll plazas on the Tamil Nadu Highway will rise from 72 to 90 due to these new projects. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is overseeing the initiative, expanding the state*s national highway (NH) network from 2,735 km to 3,698 km. The estimated cost for these four-lane highways is around Rs 20,000 crore.
Total National Highway Network In Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu currently has a vast national highway network of 6,805 km, which includes:
- 1,282 km of two-lane roads
- 2,383 km of two-lane roads with paved shoulders
- 384 km of six-lane roads
- 21 km of eight-lane roads
Additionally, 767 km of ongoing NH projects in the state are already 60% complete and are expected to be operational within the next 12 to 15 months.
Completion Timeline For Six Four-Lane NH Projects
According to New Indian Express reports, Tamil Nadu has collected Rs 26,000 crore in toll revenue from its national highways over the last ten years. Out of eight major NH projects, six four-lane projects are expected to be finished within a year.
The key four-lane NH projects nearing completion are:
- Vikravandi-Thanjavur NH 每 163 km
- Mamallapuram-Puducherry East Coast Road 每 106 km
- Gudipala-Sriperumbudur (Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway) 每 106 km
- Nagapattinam-Thanjavur NH 每 65 km
- Dindigul-Pollachi NH 每 131.9 km
- Villupuram-Nagapattinam NH 每 125 km
Progress Of Other NH Projects In Tamil Nadu
Apart from these six projects, other highways in Tamil Nadu are also progressing steadily:
- Dindigul-Theni-Kumuli NH (135 km) 每 20% to 30% complete
- Neraluru-Thorapalli Agraharam-Jittandahalli NH (60 km) 每 20% to 30% complete
The 963-km Tamil Nadu NH project is advancing at a good pace, with 767 km expected to be operational within a year. The Dindigul-Pollachi four-lane NH stretch (131.9 km) is almost finished, and the Oddanchatram-Madathukulam section is already in use with a toll plaza at Chatrapatti.
Toll Plazas & Ongoing Construction Work
Work on the remaining sections of the Dindigul-Pollachi NH is also progressing rapidly. The Kamalapuram (Dindigul)-Oddanchatram and Madathukulam-Pollachi sections will soon be completed.
New toll plazas at Paraipatti and Gomangalam are also expected to be operational in the near future, making travel more efficient and well-regulated across Tamil Nadu.
