They May Be Poor But This Dalit Family Has Made A Record For India's Most Doctorates
When Bhagwandas Ahirwar starting working in 1973, he could barely make ends meet. He earned just Rs 165 monthly. There was not much improvement in his financial condition over the years. But this did not prevent him from ensuring that his five kids got more than a decent education. All five have doctorates, earning the Dalit family the national record of having maximum members with PhDs.

The Limca Book of Records recognised the family's feat when it handed over a certificate on August 21 attesting the family's India record of a single family with so many PhD holders. Ahirwar, who studied up to class XII and retired as an assistant clerk at a school, said that he encouraged all his children to pursue higher education.
"I always dreamt my children would grow up to be well educated. God has been kind to me in blessing me with brilliant children," said Ahirwar, who lives in Jhansi and teaches street kids free of cost.
Ahirwar's eldest son, Mukesh, 43, has a PhD in management studies and is posted in Varanasi in the weights and measurement department. His sister, Ragini, 40, has a PhD in zoology from Bundelkhand University.
