As many as 258 grooms along with their relatives will arrive on cycles for their marriage on November 7 to create awareness on traffic and pollution.
This is being done as part of the 58th mass marriage ceremony organised by community organisation Saurastra Patel Seva Samaj.

Generally as per tradition, bridegrooms reach marriage venue in a procession. This time though as part of this novel experiment, the grooms will take out a procession on bicycles along with community leaders on the city roads to create awareness about traffic and pollution.
Kanji Bhalala, president of Saurastra Patel Seva Samaj, said, "We appeal for more people to join in the yatra as Surat has been selected among top 20 smart cities. People should be more conscious about health, traffic and pollution. We need to increase the use of cycle to reduce pollution and improve health."
Several community leaders will also join the procession with 258 grooms, he added. Laxman Dobariya, secretary of the Saurastra Patel Seva Samaj, said, "One of the couples who will be getting married ¡ª Nita and Harkisan ¡ª will lead the procession."
