Prophet Controversy: Top Govt Official Wants Treason Charges Against Those Instigated Islamic Nations

Amid the continuing row over comments made by former BJP spokespersons, Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal against Prophet Muhammad, a top official of the Government of India has suggested that Indian citizens who instigated Islamic countries should be booked for treason.

Uday Mahurkar, the information commissioner at the Central Information Commission (CIC) said that even the property of such people could be attached by enacting a law.

"The Nation has taken measures on the Prophet controversy. Now time for India to make a list of Indian citizens who instigated Islamic nations against India & charge them with treason. Their¡¯s is anti-national activity. Even their property could be attached by enacting a Law," Mahurkar said in a Tweet.

Who is Uday Mahurkar?

Mahurkar, a former journalist and author was appointed as information commissioner in 2020.

According to the Central Information Commission's website, Mahurkar is an expert on on radical Islamic movements, Veer Savarkar and PM Modi's model of governance.

Delhi Police files FIR against Nupur Sharma, others

This comes as the Delhi Police Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit has registered two separate cases in connection with alleged hate speeches made by various political leaders of different parties.

Those booked by the Delhi Police include former BJP leader Naveen Kumar Jindal and Nupur Sharma, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Shadab Chauhan, Saba Naqvi, Maulana Mufti Nadeem, Abdur Rehman, Gulzar Ansari and Swami Yati Narasimhananda.

The official said one of the FIRs was lodged under sections 153, 295, 505 of IPC.

"We have lodged the FIR against those who were spreading messages of hate, inciting various groups and creating situations which are detrimental to the maintenance of public tranquility. The FIRs against multiple individuals cut across religions. We will investigate the roles of various social media entities in promoting false and wrong information with an intention to create unrest in the cyber space. They are compromising with the social fabric of the country," a senior police official said.

Prophet Muhammad controversy

The remarks of Sharma and Jindal against Prophet Muhammad have resulted in an unprecedented backlash against India from across the world.

Several Islamic countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan had registered strong protests against the offensive comments.

The Indian government had distanced itself from the comments made by the two BJP leaders calling them fringe elements.

Amid growing pressure to act against them, the BJP had suspended both Sharma and Jindal from the party.

The duo had alleged that ever since their comments were widely circulated online they were getting death and rape threats.
