UP Bride Calls Off Wedding After Groom Failed To Read Newspaper Without His Glasses

A wedding getting called off at the last moment has become a not-so-rare incident these days. While there have been many reasons for such actions, a recent incident from UP could be the first of its kind.

A bride in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya called off her wedding because the groom could not read the newspaper without his spectacles.

What happened?

Archana, the bride from Jamalpur village of Sadar Kotwali area, was all set to marry Shivam, a resident of Banshi village.

Until the day of the marriage, the bride's family was unaware of the groom's weak eyesight.

It was only when the bride and other women from her family noticed that the groom was wearing spectacles for a good part of the day of the wedding that they felt suspicious about it, and asked him to read a newspaper without the glasses as a test.

As the groom could not read without his glasses, the bride and her family called off the wedding.

They alleged that Shivam and his family had never mentioned that he was wearing glasses.

"I had no idea that the groom's eyesight was so weak. My daughter, on knowing the fact, decided to call off the marriage," Arjun Singh, the father of the bride said.

The bride's family then demanded that the groom's family return the cash and the motorcycle given as dowry, along with all the expenses that they had incurred for the marriage.

Last week, in a similar incident, a bride in Jaunpur district of UP had called off her wedding soon after reaching her in-laws' house.

The bride reportedly slapped the groom after learning that he had an affair with another girl.

In another incident from the Maharajganj district, a wedding was called off after the groom claimed to be a Muslim failed to recite Urdu words properly during the ceremony.

The girl was aware that the boy was not a Muslim but she decided not to reveal the same to her family. The girl persuaded the boy to marry her according to Muslim customs. However, after learning his true identity, the bride's family called off the wedding.

While these are cases of cheating, a wedding was called off by the groom in Odisha after the family of the bride was late to serve mutton at the reception.

The groom Ramakant Patra was welcomed by the bride's family, but when they proceeded for lunch, they were told that the mutton was not ready yet.

Angered by this, Patra called off the marriage.
