Known for his anti-corruption stance, Dev is capitalizing on his symbol, emphasizing the message "Chapal lagao brashtacharion ko bhagao" (chase away the corrupt with slippers) while engaging with people on the streets, accompanied by his supporters.
Pandit Keshav Dev is an RTI activist and is associated with organizations such as the Bharatiya Hindu Rashtra Sena and Anti-Corruption Sena. He has contested assembly elections twice in the past.
In the previous assembly elections, Dev contested from the city but faced defeat. Last year, he ran as an independent candidate from the 69th ward of the Aligarh Municipal Corporation.
Notably, he made a distinctive entrance to the nomination center by arriving seated atop a tree. Passersby who witnessed him heading to fill out the form on a rickshaw were quite intrigued by his unique mode of transportation.
Aligarh constituents will cast their votes in the second phase on April 26, with the final vote counting set for June 4.
In the 2019 elections, BJP's Satish Kumar Gautam emerged victorious in Aligarh with 656215 votes, defeating BSP's Dr. Ajeet Baliyan.
In the 2014 elections, BJP secured 71 seats with a 42.6% vote share, while Congress managed only 2 seats with a 7.5% vote share.
On April 8, the Election Commission of India assigned election symbols to independent candidates. These symbols varied widely, ranging from ordinary to peculiar. Examples included symbols like an ice cream cone, a laptop, and grapes.
The distinctiveness of such symbols adds flavor to the electoral landscape, reflecting the varied nature of India's democratic process.
