41-year-old Patricia Eriksson, a Swedish national, has been roaming the streets of Maharashtra¡¯s Nagpur in search of a woman named 'Shanta.' Shanta, she says, is her biological mother who had given Patricia up for adoption four decades ago.
From Anganwadis to red-light districts, the search continues
Patricia Eriksson, born to an unwed mother at Nagpur¡¯s Daga Hospital in February 1983, was adopted by a Swedish couple from a local orphanage a year later.
Now, she's determined to find her birth mother, and this isn't her first trip to Nagpur in pursuit of her.
From Anganwadis to Nagpur's red-light district known as ¡®Ganga-Jamuna,¡¯ Patricia is exploring every possible place to find her mother.
A lifelong quest for her mother
Patricia's quest to find her mother isn't new; she has wished to meet her since she was six years old.
As a child, she would approach any dark-skinned woman she saw, hoping she might be her mother.
"I dreamt of my mother as a beauty queen or probably the best-looking woman on earth or an actor. She will always be my princess," Patricia shared with TOI.
Growing up, she started examining her adoption papers and gathering clues to locate the woman who gave birth to her.
Want to hug her & shower kisses, says Patricia
On her initial visit to Nagpur in 2022, Patricia's first stop was the orphanage where she had been put up for adoption.
Anjali Pawar, who runs an NGO in Pune, has been assisting Patricia in her quest.
Anjali mentioned, "I have been to Nagpur four times in my search for Patricia¡¯s mother¡ There¡¯s confusion in the first name, middle and surname. We even checked the voter¡¯s list, but could not trace her."
"I just want to meet her once, hug and shower kisses before leaving this planet," expressed Patricia, her longing for closure evident in her words.
