In a rather disappointing disclosure, it has emerged that of about 72 lakh trainees under the government of India¡¯s ambitious Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), a meagre 21 per cent have been able to bag placements.
Being implemented by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana was launched in 2015 as the flagship scheme under the Skill India Mission.

It was widely advertised and hyped eloquently upon but a vast majority of those who enrolled under this ambitious programme of the NDA government could not find a placement.
Notably, improving the skills to equip trainees with the wherewithal to fit in the industry was central to the objectives of the programme but only 15.23 lakh of the total 72 lakh entrants have been able to secure a placement.
The scheme that is aimed at providing employable skills to the youth featured prominently in the Rajya Sabha last week, where the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship placed on record that under PMKVY 1.0, 19.85 lakh candidates were trained, out of which 2.62 lakh ( 13.23 per cent) got placements.

Further, it was shared that under PMKVY 2.0 (2016-2020), which was launched in October 2016, about 52.12 lakh candidates had received training but only 12.60 lakh (24.18 per cent) have got jobs until June 2019.
Under the Skill India Mission, the government is implementing various schemes for imparting employable skills to the youth through short-term and long-term training. There are more than 20 central departments running a slew of schemes and programmes.

Ur best wishes inspired Team India to win 1 silver & 1 bronze at @WorldSkills 2017. This year again a team of 48 competitors are gearing up to win laurels for India at the Olympics of skills in Russia next month. Ur words continue to inspire them. #AbSkillsKiBari pic.twitter.com/XGOqEeFDy1
But when it comes to jobs for which the training is being provided, an abysmally low fraction of the trainees have been able to make the cut.

Answering the question on the number of people trained, employment opportunities created due to the initiatives and proposed employment opportunities, Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Mahendra Nath Pandey told the House in a written reply that the PMKVY 2.0 (2016-2020) mandates training providers (TPs) to facilitate placements of certified candidates, reported The Hindu BusinessLine.
This comes at a time when studies suggesting the downfall in placements from top universities and colleges are doing the rife in premiere Indian publications and when the general mood of the business fraternity is low.
The house was also told that the Training Providers need to organise placement melas every six months with the support of Sector Skill Councils. They must also include local industries and focus on building awareness among youth.
