About a week ago, people in Phoenix saw a man by a road handing them out copies of his resume to passersby in hopes of increasing his chances of getting a new job offer.
The incident caught on like wildfire with many tweeting about it online. If there's one lesson here, it's that anything can be a good opportunity if you so choose.
I was driving down Camelback Rd in Phx near my office and saw this guy on the side of the road with a smile in 110-degree heat, with a sign asking people to take his resume. I love that he was not asking for a handout, just for people to consider him for a job. #pleaseshare #job pic.twitter.com/5QAUpCkGWk

Patrick Hoagland of Phoenix got laid off from his job as a forklift operator at a metal recycling company. After that he did what any of us would. He filled out forms online and applied to multiple companies. He personally handed out copies of his resume to local businesses but, unfortunately, he did not get any promising responses.
Instead of being disheartened, Patrick decided to take charge of the situation and how. Let's just say what he did was pretty unique.
He stood by a street corner with a sign board which had messages on it like ¡®please take a resume¡¯, ¡®laid off¡¯, ¡®looking for a job¡¯.
Reportedly, the 30 year old wrote in an email, ¡®I had only been unemployed a few weeks, but it was very unexpected and I needed to figure something out fast. I at first laughed and thought that was silly, but I kept thinking about it. I figured, why not?! There are millions of people in Phoenix driving around, someone might hire me.¡¯
He printed out 200 copies of his r¨¦sum¨¦ and went ahead with his idea. That is when Melissa DiGianfilippo came across him. According to Fox5, she wrote in an email, ¡®I was impressed with Patrick because it was 110¡ã outside and what I saw was really unexpected. He was standing on the side of the road with a sign and a stack of resumes and a huge smile on his face.¡¯
After DiGianfilippo posted the tweet mentioned above things changed for Hoagland rapidly.
Hoagland started receiving thousands of messages from businesses, contractors, recruiters or random people just wishing him luck. With those messages he got many job offers too.
His idea is great because the online job applications are a lazy way for employers to hire. If you don¡¯t match the computer generated questions, the employer never sees your application! Face to face is the best but communication is quickly dying out. Your tweet helped!

Wow! Excellent job Melissa ?? you have a heart of gold. Saw this all the way in Canada - we need more people like you that actually care. Praying that Patrick gets a job to support his family.

¡°I was definitely hoping he would get some good job leads out of the post, but I definitely did not anticipate it blowing up in the way it did!¡± DiGianfilippo reportedly said.
She might have posted his resume even on LinkedIn and talking about it she reportedly said, ¡°The post on LinkedIn is what really has taken off the most, generating thousands and thousands of re-shares, reactions, and likes. I also posted it as an Instagram story which got a ton of engagements and people wanting to reach out to him, on Facebook and on Twitter. I am so amazed by how many people re-shared the post because they really wanted to be a part of a positive story.¡±
After going through all the offers Patrick decided to go ahead with Flatline Concrete Grinding in Phoenix.
Unsurprisingly, he got the job. He has kept in touch with DiGianfilippo and talking about her he reportedly said, ¡°She has been so great, she didn¡¯t need to help me, but she did and it has changed my life. I am so grateful for her.¡±
