While We Still Struggle With Web Check-In, Bengaluru Airport Aims To Bring Face Recognition Technology By 2019
Bengaluru International Airport has perhaps understood its flyers¡¯ struggles and plans to roll out a facial recognition technology on some select airlines come 2019.
Regular passengers of airlines know the hassles of obtaining a boarding pass and then presenting it at every other security checkpoint. Though web-check in(s) were aimed at cutting the crowd and all the chaos that comes with checking-in your luggage, 100 per cent execution of this initiative has still not taken place.
For instance, passengers in New Delhi who have web-checked in can submit their baggage at Shivaji stadium or at the New Delhi metro station that further connects to the Airport Express line. However, this service is also confined to selected airlines like Air India, Jet Airways and Vistara.

Bengaluru International Airport has perhaps understood its flyers¡¯ struggles and plans to roll out a facial recognition technology on some select airlines come 2019.
The private airport operator in collaboration with a Lisbon-based digital and biometric solutions services provider Vision-Box has agreed upon a pact that aims to make the boarding process paperless. The announcement was made by the Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) in a release, the Financial Express reported.
How Will The Technology Work?
The biometric technology will identify passengers as they move across the airport, avoiding stops and repeated presentations of the boarding pass, passport and other physical identity documents that are required at the airport.
The self-boarding technology is aimed at transforming the passenger experience by making the airports future-ready. This will also strengthen the Indian government¡¯s digital initiative, ¡®DigiYatra¡¯. The Digiyatra project seeks to minimize paperwork while travelling via air where people can gain entry into airports and board flights using a passenger¡¯s Aadhaar number and mobile phone.

Hari Marar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, BIAL, told PTI, ¡°Vision-Box¡¯s biometric technology, combined with its passenger flow platform will enable a seamless journey for our passengers, from registration to boarding,¡±
Jet Airways, Air Asia and Spicejet passengers are reportedly going to be the first users when the first phase of the rollout will be completed in the first quarter of 2019.
If this technology is implemented successfully then Bangalore airport will become the first aerodrome in the country to provide a fully-functional solution to cumbersome boarding paperwork.
