In UP, Woman Beaten Up In Full Public View By Husband, In-Laws For Having Second Daughter

In a shocking incident, a woman was beaten up and thrown out of the house by her husband and in-laws after she gave birth to a girl, the couple's second daughter.

The incident was reported from Mahoba district in Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region.

The woman, identified as Kusuma has been married to Neeraj Prajapati for ten years.

Harassed for not giving birth to a boy

According to her, problems started a few years ago when she gave birth to her first child - a girl.

Her husband and in-laws wanted a boy child and started harassing and assaulting her for giving birth to a girl.

She said that things took a turn for the worse after the couple's second child was born.

Furious over not giving birth to a boy the husband and in-laws physically assaulted Kusuma and even starved her.

Became a labourer to feed her children

Kusuma even alleged that she was forced to become a daily wage labourer to feed her children.

Recently she was assaulted and thrown out of the house by her in-laws.

The incident happened in full public view and nobody came forward to stop the assault.

Assaulted in full public view

In the video, which appears to have been shot by someone from the terrace of the adjacent building, two women can be seen repeatedly assaulting Kusuma who is lying on the ground.

The women also can be heard verbally abusing her and accusing her of black magic.

They are seen repeatedly banging the head of Kusuma on the ground even when she is screaming in pain.

Following a complaint by the woman's family, the police said an investigation has been launched into the incident.

The woman who had injuries all over her body has been admitted to the district hospital.

"The woman has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. We have registered a First Information Report (FIR), and appropriate action will be taken against the accused," said Sudha Singh, Superintendent of Police, Mahoba.

Majority of Indians still prefer a boy

The recent National Family Health Survey showed that nearly 80% of those surveyed said they wanted at least one son in their lifetime.

This preference for sons over daughters - described as "son preference" - is rooted in the traditional belief that a male child would carry forward the family name and look after the parents in their old age, while daughters would leave them for their matrimonial homes and cost them dowries.
