VVS Laxman to coach India in Zimbabwe; Gautam Gambhir to lead in Sri Lanka: Reports
VVS Laxman has been appointed interim coach for India's T20I series against Zimbabwe following Rahul Dravid's resignation, while Gautam Gambhir will reportedly start his tenure as head coach with the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July-August.
Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir is set to take over as head coach of the Indian men's cricket team following the 2024 T20 World Cup, succeeding Rahul Dravid. However, Gambhir's first assignment will not be the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe in July.
Laxman interim coach for Zimbabwe tour
With Rahul Dravid stepping down, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed VVS Laxman, head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), as interim coach for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Laxman, who has frequently served as interim head coach when Dravid and the senior coaching staff were on breaks, will lead the young squad in Zimbabwe.
"There is a possibility that Laxman along with some of the NCA coaches will travel with the new look squad to Zimbabwe. Laxman and the NCA team have always filled up whenever Rahul Dravid and the first team coaches have been taken periodic breaks during their stint," a BCCI source told PTI.
Laxman was also a candidate for the permanent head coach position but chose to remain with the NCA. He last led the Indian team during the three-match T20I series against Ireland.
Gambhir's tenure to begin with Sri Lanka tour
Gambhir, known for his success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he recently guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third title, will officially begin his tenure as head coach with the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July-August. A PTI report confirms that the Sri Lanka tour will be Gambhir's first assignment with the team.
Zimbabwe tour from July 6 to July 14
India's tour of Zimbabwe is scheduled from July 6 to July 14. A young squad, featuring standout performers from the IPL 2024 season, will play in the five-match T20I series. The selection committee is expected to announce the squad soon, with Hardik Pandya or Suryakumar Yadav likely to captain the team.
