Navigating the intricacies of obtaining a visa, let alone a green card for permanent residency, is a daunting journey for anyone looking to study or work in the US. Now, Nahuel Candia, founder of a payments and subscriptions platform, is shedding light on his 15-year quest to secure a green card, revealing a journey filled with challenges and revelations.
A green card or Permanent Resident Card, is issued by the US government to authorise individuals to live and work permanently in the United States as lawful permanent residents (LPRs).
"After more than 15 years of dreaming about this moment, I am now a permanent resident of the United States," begins Nahuel Candia, founder of Rebill.com, a payments and subscriptions platform.
He achieved this milestone through the EB1A visa (Green Card) for non-citizens of extraordinary ability, which is reserved for the top 1% of experts worldwide.
Reflecting on his journey, Nahuel shared, "Not many know the struggles I faced to get here and the challenges that continue to test me every day."
His quest began 15 years ago with a passion for programming during high school. Mentored by Sonia Oster, director of the Fulbright Alumni Association and an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, Nahuel was inspired to pursue a career in the US.
Despite being accepted by three US universities, financial constraints prevented him from attending.
Undeterred, Nahuel founded his first company, Shovel Apps, at 19¡ªa venture that led him to San Francisco and immersed him in the city's entrepreneurial culture. His entrepreneurial journey took him through highs and lows, including a program at MIT and the closure of his first company in 2016.
Returning to the UK briefly, Nahuel found his stride with Rebill, eventually joining Y Combinator and expanding his team in Argentina.
Now, with 12 team members, Nahuel's move to the US represents a pivotal step in his vision to bridge the US and Latin American markets.
"I promised myself that if I moved to the USA, it would be through a grand entrance, not just as an employee," Nahuel affirmed, encapsulating his journey towards realising his American dream.
